I work with a wide range of visual art experiences, including ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography, in the high school level and senior care levels. Utilizing the Montessori approach and my own experiences with the particular group of residents I create art activities that range in medium, and are based in relationship and knowledge of residents abilities. The heart of the Montessori approach is to create an activity that "enables individuals to care for themselves, others, and their community." In order to create a successful program providing residents as much autonomy as possible will create positive emotions toward the activity and increase participation. By meeting the resident where they are at, engagement is much more successful. Some residents are unable to leave their room or have increased anxiety doing so, by creating smaller activities and bringing those to their room or setting aside time for 1-1 visits in the weekly schedule the program extends past group activities. https://montessori-ami.org/about-montessori/montessori-dementia-disability-ageing

About LilyLily Roth is a painter and artist from rural Oregon. She is a graduate from Western Oregon University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts and minoring in Education through the Art Education program. She is approaching her 3rd year of teaching High School Art in Turner, Oregon and is currently pursuing her own painting career. Through her paintings she examines people, herself, and objects as a way to communicate different human experiences, uncovering similarities and differences in those journeys.
Artist Statement
I have the privilege of painting humans, studying the figure and the response to the world around it. I feel that the study of humans is a vehicle to tell a story that either everyone can relate to or can expose them to something new.
The majority of my artwork is paintings on canvas, but has evolved into more sculptural aspects, wood working, and fiber arts to expand on the concept of evolving characters. I thrive in creating art works with various media in order to explore the intersecting identities that create a person and the vulnerability in showing them all at once.
Throughout numerous series I have focused on shadows and light through various fabrics and natural lenses in order to capture the beauty of human, nature, and objects. I aim to capture the intersection of man made materials and human experience.
Aside from the figurative painting lens, painting unique objects is a dominant focus of my artist journey as well. The objects I choose to capture in my paintings are found objects, hand-me-down, or thrifted. I not only enjoy the hunt, but the idea of giving older or otherwise seemingly random objects new life is consistently inspiring.
Painting fabrics and glassworks that capture light, reflections, and bold colors may be an aspect of painting that is now new, but in this artwork it is unique because of the subjects depicted. The contrast in the simplicity of a still life and capturing the complex values/reflections is another reason for my inspiration for painting.
