What is yoga? Union, yolk, or connection. The practice of yoga has many limbs as defined by Pantanjali. There are personal practices (ethical and moral) as well as discipline and inner observances. Asana, the physical and most tangible aspect of yoga that builds strength, flexibility and balance. Yoga also includes the practice of breath (pranayama), control of senses, turning inward (Pratyaharaoncentration), Concentration (Dharana), direction of your focus, Meditation (Dhyana) continuous contemplation and Union- the ultimate goal, (Samadhi) complete absorption and oneness with universe.
These practices are a daily way of living. In which each part of life can be used as a way to make mindful choices as we move through the world, both on and off your yoga mat. Your yoga mat, or special place you set up to practice can make all of these a bit easier by removing distraction. Practicing with a guide or yoga teacher and surrounding yourself with people practicing also is a helpful way to start or consistently practice.
